Rice Eccles Stadium Rules
Rice Eccles Stadium Policies and Rules Guide Rice-Eccles Stadium, located at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, maintains comprehensive policies to ensure safety, efficiency, accessibility, and a positive experience for all guests. These rules apply to athletic events like football games as well as concerts and other events, with some variations noted below. Always check the official stadium website or event-specific communications for the latest details, as policies can evolve.
Accessibility
Rice-Eccles Stadium provides robust ADA accommodations to welcome guests with disabilities. Designated ADA parking is available in campus lots on a first-come, first-served basis, with additional reserved stalls in specific lots like Lot 5 and Lot 14 during football games. Free parking is offered for guests displaying current ADA placards. Accessible gates include Gate A (suite holders), C, E, J, and L, with elevators at several for upper-level access. An ADA help tent operates on the east side during events. All restrooms are ADA-compliant, with single-use options for privacy. Wheelchair escort services are available from perimeter gates to seats via Guest Services (yellow-vested staff at portals 12 and 36). Seating is first-come, first-served, and accessible tickets (including companion seats) can be purchased through standard channels at the same price as comparable seating – no proof of disability is required. Closed captioning is available via the main scoreboard and StreamText for real-time transcription in multiple languages. Guests needing assistance should contact Guest Services or the box office in advance.
Animals & Service Dogs
Certified service animals and service animals in training are permitted at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Guests must present documentation for certified service animals upon entry. Venue management may grant exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Non-service animals are prohibited to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all attendees. Service animals must remain under control at all times and are not allowed in areas where they may pose a safety risk.
Age Requirements
Children aged 2 and under are admitted free without a ticket when accompanied by a ticketed adult; they must sit on the adult’s lap and not occupy an additional seat. All children must be supervised at all times. Lost children should be taken to the nearest Guest Services center. Events are family-friendly, but parents are responsible for ensuring appropriate behavior. No specific upper age limits apply, though all guests must comply with fan conduct guidelines.
Bag Policy
Bag policies differ by event type for security and efficiency. For University of Utah athletic events (football, etc.), a clear bag policy is enforced: one clear bag up to 12″ x 12″ x 6″ or a one-gallon clear plastic storage bag per person, plus one small clutch or purse (approximately 4.5″ x 6.5″) for privacy items. Non-athletic events (concerts, Supercross) have a stricter no-bag policy – only the small clutch is allowed, with diaper bags and medically necessary bags permitted but subject to search (infant must be present for diaper bag inspection). Prohibited bags include backpacks, purses larger than allowed, fanny packs, and any non-clear or oversized items. Guests with prohibited bags must return them to their vehicles. Seat cushions without pockets/zippers (under 18″ wide) and blankets over the shoulder are allowed. This policy speeds entry and enhances screening.
Entry and Security
Only guests with valid tickets or credentials may enter. A strict no-re-entry policy is in effect – leaving the venue means forfeiting re-admission unless approved via Guest Services. Gates typically open two hours before football games. All guests and bags undergo screening; prohibited items result in denial of entry or removal. Fan behavior guidelines promote good sportsmanship, respect, and safety – disruptive conduct, foul language, or violations lead to ejection and potential bans.
Food, Drink & Alcohol
No outside food or drink is permitted except one factory-sealed plastic water bottle (1 liter or less) per person. Empty reusable bottles (same size) are allowed and can be filled at concourse stations; glass is prohibited. Guests with medical needs may bring required liquids with documentation. Alcohol is strictly prohibited inside the venue for public events; violators are escorted out. Limited exceptions exist only for approved third-party rentals in designated reception rooms.
Payment Options
All concessions and sales at Rice-Eccles Stadium are cashless. Only credit/debit cards or mobile payment apps are accepted. ATMs have been removed to reduce touchpoints. Plan accordingly by bringing cards or ensuring mobile payment is set up.
Photography and Recording
Personal still or video cameras (beyond phone cameras) are not allowed. Phone cameras are permitted, but guests must avoid standing in aisles, keep flashes off during indoor events, and cease recording if requested. No commercial use of images or videos is permitted without written approval from the university and event promoter. Streaming gameplay or using photos/videos commercially violates entry terms. Additional restrictions may apply per event.
Prohibited Items
Prohibited items include alcohol, weapons, drugs, drones (per FAA and campus rules), outside food/drink beyond the water exception, large bags violating policy, and any items that could endanger safety or disrupt events. Tobacco products and e-cigarettes are banned. Guests found with prohibited items may be denied entry or removed. Medical exceptions require inspection.
Smoking Policy
Rice-Eccles Stadium and the University of Utah campus are entirely tobacco-free. Smoking, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, and all tobacco products are prohibited with no designated areas. This supports a healthy environment for all guests. Violations result in removal. By adhering to these policies, guests contribute to a safe, efficient, and enjoyable experience at Rice-Eccles Stadium. For questions, contact Guest Services at 801-213-2588 or visit stadium.utah.edu.
